Action programme of the Swedish Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights
The aim of the Swedish Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights is that all people living in Eastern Europe and Central Asia should enjoy peace and a social climate where their human rights are respected. They should be able to exert an influence over their living conditions and the development in their respective home countries by democratic means. The Swedish Initiative wants to promote a development leading to increased possibilities for citizens in Eastern Europe and Central Asia to actively influence the conditions for themselves and for their countries, among other things by organizing and engaging in volunteer organizations.
Vision of the Swedish Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights
The Swedish Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights holds that democracy and human rights have a value in themselves and are built upon inviolable principles. By accepting that all people are equals, as the general declaration of the UN proposes, the democratic process becomes the only possible way to make binding decisions.
Founding of The Swedish Initiative: Central working group leaves Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society
[17th of February 2005] The Swedish Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights is formed by a working group that has been active for many years in The Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (SPAS). After a decision by the board of SPAS to make a drastic change of direction in its work with democracy in Eastern Europe, the group chooses to leave the society and start its own organization instead.
